Trump extended the 90-day shipping exemption of the Jones Act to energy transport

On 11 August, Trump extended the exemption from the Jones Act to allow foreign vessels to transport oil and other commodities within the United States for 90 days, with the addition of new restrictions. As the Iranian war disrupted the flow of crude oil and pushed fuel costs, Trump continued to maintain the relevant exemption while narrowing its scope of application. The new exemption will focus on energy transport, including gasoline, aviation fuel, crude oil, plaster oil, liquefied natural gas, soybeans oil and fertilizers. The future Pentagon will need to consult with the United States Maritime Administration before deciding whether to exempt individual flights. The White House indicated that the exemption would help to ensure the continued access of the United States military and key industries to critical resources and to increase domestic transport of products such as petrol, diesel and aviation fuel. However, in the view of the United States shipping industry and some members of Congress, immunity has weakened the protection of the domestic shipping industry under the Jones Act。
