Thirteen years of piracy attacks in Somalia

International Maritime Organization statistics indicate that at least 15 pirate attacks have taken place in the waters around Somalia this year, up from 2013. According to the information received, a report of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) provides an inventory of incidents in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean waters within 2,000 kilometres of the Somali coast since 1994. Since 2013, no more than 10 piracy attacks have been recorded annually in the region, compared with 5 in 2025. However, in 2026, there was a significant increase in pirate attacks, with pirates particularly active in the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and Somalia。
