Federal Reserve Voicescope: The Bercent policy response function turns to less doves

On 5 August, Nick Timiraos, the Federal Reserve Channel, wrote that the policy response function of United States Treasury Secretary Besent had turned to less doves. His remarks this year suggest that the Fed should continue to maintain interest rates. Earlier this year, Besent quoted the model that the Fed's interest rate level was higher than that of a neutral rate, possibly from over 25 basis points to over 100 basis points. Today (4 August) he presented two points. He began by defending the decision of Walsh last week not to elaborate on any policy response function: “I think that every meeting should be open and market participants should judge for themselves... I think Walsh wants to keep the choice to achieve the best results”. Secondly, he did propose a set of policy response functions that could be considered doves and argued that the immediate impact should be ignored: “What are the implications of rising short-term interest rates? We'll see about that." He raised the issue, but then responded by noting that basic inflation was “very moderate... very stable”. “The remainder of core inflation has been very stable, after the elimination of more energy-affected volatility. I believe that this will continue.”
